New Curriculum for September 2019

Excited to announce we will be following the The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) from September 2019. They are both purposeful and engaging and will develop the attitudes, knowledge, skills and understanding the children need; not to mention promote 'international mindedness'!

Why the IPC / IEYC? 

We selected the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) for the following reasons: 

1. A ‘joined-up’ curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. The use of both the IEYC and IPC will ensure a clear progression of knowledge, skills and understanding and mean children will be used to the language, structure and approaches to learning used across the school.
2. It is purposeful and engaging. IPC’s themed units help children to see how subjects are both independent and interdependent. Not every subject is taught every week, creating time and space for children to deepen their knowledge and understanding of their topic.  The IPC / IEYC approach emphasises ‘real-life’, hands-on and experiential learning with opportunities for special events, trips and visitors.
3. It meets the children’s needs. The main barriers to learning in our school are often linked to language, vocabulary and reading.  The IPC provides rich opportunities to gain knowledge about the wider world, to build vocabulary and develop oracy skills, all of which will support their reading. 
4. It develops the children as learners. The children are involved in the learning process at every stage, helping to shape the ‘route’ through a unit and self-assessing using ‘rubrics’.  The IPC also includes ‘Brainwave’ units that are designed to develop the children’s understanding of how they learn and give them strategies to support their learning and thinking skills.
5. There are opportunities for parents to engage with their children’s learning. There are regular opportunities for parents to visit the school at unit ‘exit points’.
6. Links to our School Values / Character Education. The IPC helps to develop the values and attitudes children will find essential in the 21st century:  Enquiry, resilience, morality, communication, thoughtfulness, cooperation, respect and adaptability. Opportunities to experience and practise these are built into the learning tasks within each unit of work.
7. Develops ‘International Mindedness’. The IPC helps children begin to build a national, international and intercultural perspective. Each thematic IPC unit includes an international aspect to help develop a sense of ‘international mindedness’, respect and tolerance.
